Keep Baby Busy And Active With The Best Baby Jumpers (2020 Guide)

Keep Baby Busy And Active With The Best Baby Jumpers (2020 Guide)

If you have an active baby, a jumper will allow them to burn off their energy, get in exercise, and tire out before each and every nap!

Your baby will bounce when they're happy, excited, and mad.

In fact, with my son, I can’t remember a day that went by that didn’t include him in his jumper.

He even had one at his babysitter’s house!

His legs became stronger, and it got the the point where he’d crawl toward his jumper, as if beckoning to be put in.

A baby jumper was one of the best baby items I’ve purchased, and it got used frequently.

If you’re considering purchasing a jumper or registering for one, read on to learn about everything you need to know about them and which are the best baby jumpers on the market!

What is a Baby Jumper?

A baby jumper is a stationary item that has a seat built in, which is low enough to the ground so a baby’s feel can touch and push off.

These bouncers also have adjustable settings, so the device grows with your baby.

The seat is also attached to springs, allowing for lots of bouncing fun. In some models, the seat swivels, giving your baby a 360 degree experience.

On other bouncers, there are activity stations built in that play music, expose your baby to lights, sounds, and textures.

Do You Need a Baby Jumper?

In my opinion, you totally need a baby jumper!

They come in different forms, so there’s one for every price point, home, and child.

Generally, babies can be placed into a jumper when they're around six months old.

By this point, their heads don’t need support and they have control over their necks.

They're getting strong and sturdy, are most likely crawling (or on the verge), and they have lots of energy to burn.

Babies can use their jumper up until about 18 months of age, so you do get to use a jumper for a good amount of time.

Different Types of Baby Jumpers

There are a few types of items that fall into the baby jumper category. They include:

Activity Jumper

With an activity jumper, you slip your baby into a seat and they can either jump freely and safely, or utilize the activities scattered around the jumper.

Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo
  • Item arrives in frustration-free, easy-to-open packaging that’s 100% recyclable. For a gift-ready box, select “Ship in Amazon packaging” at checkout
  • Exciting lights, sounds and music reward your baby's every jump

There are usually instruments to play, a bar that goes across the top and boasts hanging items to grasp, or even attached toys to feel and teethe on.

Stationary Jumper

A stationary jumper is a bare bones model consisting of a simple chair connected to springs, that allows your baby to jump.

Its seat remains in one position and there is generally a tray attached that allows you to place small items in it to entertain your baby.

Doorway Jumper

A doorway jumper hooks up to any doorway and suspends from the arch and babies can sit in a seat and push off from the floor to jump away.

Graco Bumper Jumper, Stratus
  • Sturdy bounce spring with hidden safety cord for nonstop little leg action and jumping joy
  • Keep doorways mark free with our no-mark clamp because fun should be the only lasting impression

The seat is usually designed in some kind of character fabric or it has attached toys for sensory stimulation.

Baby Jumper Shopping Tips

You can get a great jumper in most baby stores, big name retailers, or online. Consider these shopping tips before making a purchase:

  • Where will you place it? Jumpers are fun, but they take up a lot of room in your home because they are round, big, and bulky. They are also heavy to move because they are sturdy and supportive. If you’re limited for room, a doorway jumper may be your best bet. It doesn't’ take up much room at all, and can be removed with ease if you have company over and need more space.
  • How will you assemble it? If you aren’t super handy, shop for a bouncer that snaps together, rather than that needs full assembly. Doorway jumpers need quite a bit of assembly to ensure it’s securely installed. So, keep this in the back of your head when browsing some of these items.
  • Will it grow with your baby? Some jumpers have the capability to hold a small toddler. Some transition into an activity table with a bench, after the bouncing part has run its course. Which jumper can you find that ensures you get a maximum return on your investment?
  • Shop sales. Why not get a great jumper for a great price? Many parents register with places that boast reward bucks. This way, they can save up their reward dollars and get a jumper for free, closer to the time their baby is ready to use one. This way, the jumper isn’t collecting dust, waiting to be used.
  • Buy new. While it’s tempting to borrow a friend’s jumper or shop consignment, baby equipment is regularly checked for safety. You don’t want to run the risk of missing a recall, so always shop new to ensure you are putting your baby in an ultra-safe item.

Baby Jumper Features to Look For

When you're shopping, be sure to look for these important features.

  • Adjustable levels. When using a jumper for the first time, always start on the lowest setting. In fact, a great jumper should have several settings to utilize. This way you can ensure it will grow with your child and they can enjoy it well into toddler hood.
  • Sensory stimulation. Your baby can be stimulated while they jump with lights, sounds, and a variety of textures. Look for features like these that give your baby the full experience so they can strengthen their brain as they strengthen their body.
  • Harness. Your baby should have some kind of lap harness that fits their body tightly when in a doorway jumper. This ensures they don’t fall out and have fun safely. Even stationary jumpers have some kind of strap that allows them to jump securely.
  • lightbulb-o
Removable fabric. Sometimes my son would jump so much, he’d cause himself to spit up! So, be sure to select a jumper that boasts removable fabric that can be tossed in the washer, and so that its base can also be wiped down and sanitized.
  • lightbulb-o
Ease of assembly. When possible, choose a jumper that just snaps together, rather than gets screwed together. It takes much less time to set up, and these models are also easier to adjust for height changes along the way.

5 Tips for Using Jumpers Safely

Here are a few safety tips to consider to help your little one jump safely:

  • 1
Adhere to the height and weight limit. Companies establish a height and weight limit for a reason. If you place your baby in a jumper and they have exceeded this limit, they are at risk for tipping, bouncing out, or breaking their jumper (and this is especially troublesome if the jumper is attached in a doorway).
  • 2
Make sure your floor is clean. I used to put a mat underneath my son’s jumper. But, I also kept my floor very clean. This way, he jumped in a healthy environment, and I never ran the risk of him hurting his foot or toes in case something hard or hazardous was underneath his jumper. I also always checked that his jumper was level and on a smooth surface. So, while taking jumpers outdoors is fun, putting them on the grass or gravel is never a good idea.
  • 3
Put your jumper in a neutral place. By this, I mean away from a pool, steps, stove—anything that could mean serious trouble for your little one!
  • 4
Inspect springs. No item is perfect and error occurs. Always give your jumper a good look over before placing your baby in it to ensure springs or chains are not exposed. This could save little fingers from being pinched or punctured.
  • 5
Inspect attached items. Make sure the toys that are attached to your jumper are secure and baby friendly. Because your baby will try to put anything and everything in their mouth, check for loose parts that can become a choking hazard.

5 Tips for Caring & Maintaining Your Jumper

  • 1
Wipe down your jumper. You should sanitize your jumper after every use. This gets rid of spit, snot, germs—you name it. It keeps your investment looking shiny and new, and a comfortable, safe place for your little one to play.
  • 2
Wash fabric. Be sure to remove material on the seat or springs occasionally to clean it. Or, be sure to spot treat it as needed. Just allow it to air dry so it doesn’t shrink in the dryer!
  • 3
Adjust levels when needed. I always judged when I needed to move up a level when my son was bouncing higher than high. So, I made sure his tip toes could touch the floor, in order for him to push off. This way, he could jump, get some air, but not go scary high!
  • 4
Check your warranty. If something doesn’t seem right with your jumper, don’t be afraid to contact the company to check on a warranty. Many of these products come with one, as well as part replacement. So, you don’t have to sacrifice your child's safety!
  • 5
Investigate springs. If a spring feels shaky or not secure, be sure to investigate it to make sure it’s attached properly. You can easily swap springs out to keep your jumper as good as new!

Baby Jumper Myths

Some parents believe a baby jumper can transform their child’s gross motor abilities.

While they do help build muscle and stamina, there isn’t really any evidence that supports that help babies walk earlier!

Another myth about baby jumpers is that your child will become bow legged due to standing for so long.

Truth be told, young babies learn how to bear their weight on their legs and find their center of gravity, even when supported in a stand position in their jumper, so letting your child stand in a jumper will not cause this phenomena.

Best Activity Jumper

Baby Einstein Activity Jumper

Stimulation is the name of the game with the Baby Einstein Activity Jumper (click here to check the price on Amazon).

Your baby will be surrounded by over a dozen activities once they’re secured. That’s not hyperbole, either: the 360-degree design means your little one is never that far from having his or her mind engaged.

Babies will also get a kick out of playing with their favorite Baby Einstein friends as they explore.

There’s an eclectic array of things for your little one to enjoy, too. From simple activities like a spinning rattle drum to an electronic piano that features adjustable volume, bright lights, and language discovery, your baby won’t exactly run out of things to do.

The Baby Einstein Neighborhood Friends also features a seat that easily rotates 360 degrees. This eliminates the worry about your baby struggling to get from one exciting activity to another.

Features for Mom & Dad

It’s quick and easy for parents to adjust the seat on the Baby Einstein Neighborhood Friends. This design is a step up from other jumpers, which tend to be much more stubborn to move.

If you have a couple of little ones in the house, this is a feature that can be pretty important.

The jumper has a lot going on, but its sturdiness can stand up to whatever your punishment your baby can dish out.

You won’t have to worry about your baby playing with a flimsy product.

More importantly, you won’t have to worry about having the toy tipping over or the chair swiveling loose as he or she rotates.

Baby Einstein also built the toy to provide a solid measure of comfort. The seat is sufficiently padded and soft, which means your baby’s bottom will be well-protected as he or she goes up and down.

Ease of Cleaning

The seat padding is easy to remove and throw in the wash. The toys are also either made of plastic or easy-to-clean fabric. You don’t have to worry about the toy developing “interesting” odors over time if you clean it routinely.

Ease of Assembly

This does take a little elbow grease to assemble, as it’s not as intuitive to build compared to some of the other jumpers out there on the market. The trade-off here is that when it is assembled, it’s pretty sturdy.

Things to Keep in Mind

Some parents do struggle putting Baby Einstein Neighborhood Friends together, right down to trying to follow the instructions. If you’re not mechanically inclined, this may cause you a lot of frustration.

Some people also point out that the device is pretty bulky, and can take up a considerable amount of space. This could be problematic if you have family or other types of company over.

Best Exersaucer

Evenflow Exersaucer

Evenflo’s Exersaucer (click here to check the price on Amazon) is a favorite among parents, and it certainly was one of my favorites as well.

This item comes as an Exersaucer, but serves as an activity table (yes, your toddler can sit and walk around it), and also has a play mat (for ages 0-4 months) for tummy time until your baby is ready to test out their jumping legs.

This is great for ensuring you can use this item as your baby grows into toddlerhood.

Toys can remain attached or are able to detach and be played with solo.

In fact, Evenflo prides itself on this product being able to target and achieve at least 10 of your baby’s first major milestones (object recognition, tactile stimulation, etc.).

It has 11 activities that your baby can enjoy and it plays a lot of musical sounds and songs.

Your baby can rock, spin, bounce, and play their day away!

Features for Mom & Dad

This Exersaucer is fully portable, so you can move it from room to room with ease. It can also be folded up, so you can fit it in your car if you wish to travel with it.

I also found it easy to store in case I wanted to put it away if we were having company over.

Out of many bouncers on the market, this one is significantly smaller and less bulky, but certainly large enough for your baby to enjoy.

The Exersaucer has three height positions, so it can grow with your baby (up to about 24 months). Plus, its seat is able to lock in a few different ways.

The bouncer is sturdy, so you don’t have to worry about it tipping over. Just be sure to only use it according to its height restriction (30 inches).

It is a much safer alternative to a walker, because your baby is stationary at all times, yet still able to “move.”

Ease of Cleaning

The majority of the Exersaucer is plastic, so it's easy to wipe down and sanitize without staining.

It has a removeable, machine-washable seat, so you can conquer any spit up or other bodily fluids in a flash.

Evenflo recommends it should be machine washed and air dried to maintain its form and fit.

Ease of Assembly

The Exersaucer only comes in a few pieces and they are easy to attach together (took us less than 10 minutes).

You do need a screwdriver to attach some pieces, so be sure to have one on hand.

Things to Keep in Mind

Some parents feel that there are too many toys associated with this Exersaucer, leaving their baby feeling overstimulated.

Others stated they didn’t get much use out of the play mat, and some who did use the mat felt that it should have been textured or more stimulating.

Some other parents felt that their toddlers were not “into” playing with it as an activity center as they outgrew the jumper part because they played with it and all its toys so much as a baby.

Best Jumperoo

Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo

Another popular baby jumper is the totally adorable and popular Jumperoo from Fisher-Price (click here to check the price on Amazon).

This Jumperoo has a lot of great features for your baby. Its seat rotates 360 degrees, so your little one can turn all about, interacting from every angle.

It has a plastic platform that has five toys set up, and the toys are able to light up, play music, and be put into motion by your child.

Among the toys are favorite animals like an elephant, a monkey, a parrot, and a tiger (just to name a few).

This Jumperoo also has a textured teether which is attached to the side.

As your baby grows, you can adjust the height to best meet their needs and the safety standards.

Little ones also get encouraged to move and jump because they get rewarded with sounds and lights.

It holds up to 25 pounds, so your baby should be able to use it up to their first birthday or so.

Like the Evenflo Exersaucer, this Jumperoo fosters and encourages healthy development in babies. Large motor skill and small motor skills get developed through moving, spinning, and jumping, but also with its textures, colors, and grasping discoveries.

It also can develop cause and effect skills, as well as eye-hand coordination.

Features for Mom & Dad

I love that the item is quick and easy to take down if you need to (for company or travel purposes).

Its frame pivots to a lower position, allowing it to be tucked under the bed, couch, or in your car trunk.

It is also portable so it can be moved anywhere.

Plus, it’s not overly heavy, so you are able to move it on your own without help.

The Rainforest Jumperoo is very safe for your baby (who can sit or stand, based on their mood).

It’s very steady and sturdy, so you don’t have to worry about it tipping when your baby is in full fledge jump mode.

It also features a seat with soft spring covers that keep little fingers safe from getting pinched and a three-position height adjustment for the right fit (which is most important in regards to safety).

Ease of Cleaning

The pieces of this Jumperoo are plastic, so they can easily be sprayed or wiped down as often as needed.

And, the fabric seat cover can be removed so you can toss it in the washer (just air dry it) and wipe underneath in case any kind of yucky stuff or snacks get smooshed under there.

Ease of Assembly

The Jumperoo takes about ten minutes to put together—just be sure to put all batteries in each little part before assembling it.

Otherwise you will be removing them just to add the batteries and it will just take more time!

Things to Keep in Mind

Most parents who have used this Jumperoo really liked it, but do have some criticisms. I guess the biggest one is that their baby gets limited use out of it.

Parents can only put their babies in it up to 25 pounds, so they may only get several months of use (since most babies don’t go into a jumper until about 4-5 months old).

The jumper also doesn’t include any extra items, like a play mat, and it isn’t able to convert into a toddler play table.

Other parents remark that they had to keep a very close eye on their little jumpers because their hand got stuck in the side of the seat in between jumps.

While I used my own jumper a lot to get things done, my son was never really out of sight, so this was never a major concern for me (nor did I experience this).

Best Stand Jumper

Jolly Jumper on a Stand

The Jolly Jumper on a Stand (click here to check the price on Amazon) is a popular item amongst parents that want a no-frills jumper free from distractions.

There are no activity centers, no flashing lights, no noisemaking devices. All you have is a jumper, a support apparatus, and a happy, giggling baby.

This jumper is designed to help teach your baby to strengthen muscles and to refine his or her newfound coordination. It can also help your baby develop a sense of balance – a critical element for any baby to work on.

The jumper’s design also provides your baby with firm spinal support during the “jumping” session. This support is critical because it helps to foster proper development of your baby’s bones, and it will also help him or her retain upright posture.

Considering how rapidly a baby’s body can develop during this stage, these aspects can be extremely critical.

Features for Mom & Dad

The Jolly Jumper on a Stand isn’t heavy at all, checking in at around 11 pounds. Its light frame and simple design makes it very portable. You won’t have to be confined to the same room when it comes time to watch your baby frolic in the jumper.

Because there are no “whistles and bells” tied to the jumper, your baby will be naturally focused on doing nothing but jumping. This can translate to your baby easily burning off energy, which could be a boon in helping him or her fall asleep at the appropriate time when the device is properly deployed.

There are two straps that connect to the Jolly Jumper on a Stand. This provides an all-important sense of focused up and down direction to your baby’s bouncing session.

You won’t have to worry about your little tyke accidentally swinging off to the side and inadvertently bashing into something.

The harness apparatus itself is designed to be comfortable for your baby. You won’t have to worry about the device gradually irritating your bundle over the course of multiple sessions.

Ease of Cleaning

There’s not much surface area to the Jolly Jumper on a Stand. You just have to worry about wiping down poles and the harness.

The poles are plastic and free of fabric, too. You won’t have to worry about the device accumulating any weird odors over time.

Ease of Assembly

Because of the Jolly Jumper on a Stand’s simple, minimal design, it’s a snap to assemble. Most people will be able to put the device together in under 10 minutes.

If you’re especially handy, you can also disassemble the jumper relatively quickly. That way, you can take the contraption with you when it’s time for your baby to visit grandma and grandpa.

Things to Keep in Mind

Some parents are concerned with the Jolly Jumper on a Stand’s size. Even though there’s not much to the jumper, it does take up a chunk of room when it’s fully built out.

Another concern is the device’s weight limit. The maximum weight the jumper can hold is 28 pounds, which means that your baby could grow out of it quicker than you may anticipate. This is especially the case if your baby is falling in the higher percentiles.

Best Doorway Jumper

Graco Doorway Bumper Jumper

Like the name suggests, the Graco Doorway Bumper Jumper (click here to check the price on Amazon) comes equipped with a playful jungle motif. This gives the device a playful aesthetic that may naturally engage your baby.

The jumping unit is not solely built for jumping, either. The device comes with two soft, removable, interactive toys that are attached the adjustable play rings.

This level of multi-tasking engagement isn’t just limited to the jumper’s own toys. There’s a toy tray built into the contraption, so your baby can bring his or her favorite toys along for the ride.

Features for Mom & Dad

The sturdy clamp that anchors the Graco Doorway Bumper Jumper is easy to secure on practically any doorway. Wherever you need to be at in the house, the jumper can easily follow.

The jumper also doesn’t take up a whole lot of space, unlike other bulky jumpers that need a wider surface area to spread out. This could be an important feature if you’re constantly having family or other company over.

Even though the Graco Doorway Bumper Jumper is attached by one cord, the jumper does have plenty of safety features that allow you to use the device with confidence. The jumper’s sturdy spring and hidden safety cord combine to keep your baby secure.

What’s more, the width of the jumper’s toy tray acts as a buffer of sorts against doorways. If your baby starts swinging from side to side, he or she will not hit the wall.

Ease of Cleaning

The jumper’s seat pad is removable and machine washable, so cleaning up after your baby is a snap. The rest of the device is pretty easy to wipe down, as well.

Ease of Assembly

There’s not a whole lot of assembly required to using the device. Its simple design makes it easy to set up and take down.

The clamp that secures the device in your doorway is also easy to fasten. What’s more, it’s designed to be gentle on your door frame, so you won’t have to worry about it leaving a nasty mark over time.

Things to Keep in Mind

Some people do point out that adjusting the device for size is difficult. Part of the reason for this is because the instruction manual isn’t as intuitive as other jumpers.

Other people note that the jumper has a limited weight capacity. This means your baby may outgrow the device quicker than you’d prefer.

Best Space-Saving Jumper

Evenflo Exersaucer Door Jumper

A space-saving, innovative, and fun jumper for babies, Evenflo’s Exercaucer Door Jumper (click here to check the price on Amazon) is just what you need for babies who want to get up and go (but keep in your sight).

This door jumper is ideal for babies who are about five months old and are getting curious about the world around them. It can be used up to 24 pounds, so your child will most likely be able to use it well through their first year.

The seat of the jumper fully surrounds your baby and is soft and comfortable to hang out in. It connects onto any doorway by using a door-frame clamp system. It’s not only easy to set up, but boast strong, secure springs.

A safe jumper, your child’s hands aren’t able to go anywhere near the springs, so you don’t have to worry about them getting pinched. And, the springs are fully enclosed.

Offering endless entertainment and exercise for your baby, the jumper teaches them to utilize their gross motor skills while having fun.

Features for Mom & Dad

The jumper is just as easy to take down as it is to put up, thanks to no hardware being involved. It also packs up compactly, so traveling with it is a breeze.

Hang the jumper in a doorway to your kitchen so you can cook, load the dishwasher, and enjoy a cup of coffee while your little one remains in your line of sight, but also engaged.

As long as you follow height and weight requirements, your baby will be safe to be in the jumper.

If you do not adhere to the warnings, your baby may tip forward, so always make sure when they are bouncing that their feet fully touch!

Ease of Cleaning

There are minimal parts, and the padding can be removed so it’s easy to clean underneath and treat the fabric if and when something is spilled on it, or an accident happens while in the jumper.

Ease of Assembly

All you need is an 8 or 9 foot doorway, and you’re good to go.

The jumper works on a clasp system, so it takes virtually less than five minutes to set up.

Things to Keep in Mind

Some parents report that the sound that the springs make on impact can be loud, so it may not be the activity to engage your baby in if you’re doing something that requires silence or concentration (like help your other kids with their homework).

Wrapping Up

My baby jumper was a highly coveted item in my home.

Not only did it provide endless enjoyment for my son, it was something I enjoyed watching him in.

The right jumper helps stimulate the body and mind, helps little ones burn some energy, and helps add some excitement into their world.
